Surf Kona

It is our humbly belief that Makalawena just the might be, one of the best beaches on all the Hawaii Islands. The limited accessibility helps preserve all its charm. You guessed it. The State Park cannot be reached by road. The hike does not fall into the category of challenging, but it is not nicely paved road either. Then again the trek to Makalawena keeps the crowds away. You are almost guaranteed a private portion of beach on weekdays. Once you hike in, you will be greeted by several scooped bays on the Kona Coast. Get ready to see dazzling white sand and shady palm trees. This coast definesimages many people have of Hawaii.

Trailhead Information: You have two options when packing into Makalawena. We have provided information on the north and south:
North Trailhead: Take Highway 19 north of Kailua-Kona and pass Kona International Airport. The dirt road to Makalawena Beach is located between mile markers 88 and 89. Don’t have a 4 wheel drive or maybe just a scooter. Not a problem as vehicles can park just off of the highway before the road begins to get rough. If you’re feeling brave or have a 4 wheel drive vehicle you want to continue for another miles and a half. The road is rough all the way to the 2nd small parking area. Follow the signs and you should be just fine.
South Trailhead:
Take Highway 19 north of Kailua-Kona. The rough dirt road to Mahai’ula Bay is between the 90 and 91 mile markers. The road used to be difficult for passenger cars, but it can be managed if you drive slowly. There are restrooms and picnic tables at this trailhead, but no water.
Hiking Suggestions:
There are no facilities, so we suggest you bring everything you’ll need to visit. Packing out all trash is everyone’s Kuleana.Bring plenty of water. Forgetting sunscreen might be a mistake. Both trails to Makalawena are packed with a variety rough lava rocks, many visitors appreciate closed-toed shoes.View...
